Weekend Round up

Torpoint AFC19 Feb - 07:00

3 Points at the Mill to Cap off a good week and a win at St Teath

The First Team welcomed Clevedon to the Mill

The resurgence of Torpoint Athletic continued on Saturday afternoon, they completed another notable victory when they toppled top of the league Clevedon Town off their perch as Portishead Town beat St Austell to go a point clear at the summit of the league. A brace from prolific striker Curtis Damerell and a goal from Gary Hird sealed the victory, but they had to hold on hard to the three points because in the in the closing stages of the match the visitors staged a late comeback.
The visitors started the brightest of both the sides when in the third minute Harrison Coker won the ball on the edge of the area, his effort went looping over the cross bar, then five minutes later Freddie King picks up a loose pass and sends Sam Beresford through, his effort is well saved by Ryan Rickard.
The hosts start to probe the visiting defence and half way through the first half the ball is put through to Curtis Damerell, but his effort is blocked by visiting keeper James Dunn. With nine minutes of the half remaining, the hosts take the lead to the shock of The Seasiders. A great ball by Elliot Crawford is found by Ryan Richards who beats the last defender and he is then brought down in the area by the keeper. The referee Darren Gay makes no hesitation and points to the penalty spot. Curtis Damerell coolly converts the penalty, sending the keeper the wrong way. Five minutes after the restart Torpoint double their lead when Freddie Chapman plays in on the overlap to find Damerell in the box to blast home from close range. On the 56th minute, the visitors pull a goal back when George King’s free kick on the edge of the area hits the cross bar and Rickard, the rebound falls to Sam Beresford who smashes home from close range. A minute later down the other end of the pitch Torpoint react straight away and restore their two goal advantage when Owen Haslam plays on Damerell who lays the ball onto Gary Hird who slots the ball home past Dunn from 10 yards from an acute angle. Ten minutes later Richards gets the ball and turns just outside the area, his shot from an acute angle is well saved by Dunn. Then a minute later as the hosts are in the ascendancy an interchange of passes between Damerell and Richards, the latter has his shot saved. Almost immediately after a Gary Hird cross from the right rebounds off the far post to find Richards, his shot is well saved again with a superb point black save by Dunn. On the 71st minute, good build up play by the hosts midfield finds Gary Hird, he runs free into the area, his shot is put around the post by Dunn in another good save by the visiting keeper. With four minutes remaining the visitors start to look dangerous when a Lucas Vowles shot is well saved by Rickard after good build up play and then in the third minute on stoppage time Clevedon reduce their arrears. Sam Beresford plays the ball through to Alex Camm, his initial shot is saved by Rickard, Camm fires home the rebound. In the last minute of stoppage time with the visitors are trying to get an late equaliser, Lucas Vowles is played into the box, his shot is saved well by Rickard and the hosts hang on for much deserved three points.
